Magnetic Separators and Metal Detectors at ArabPlast 2019

After a successful exhibition in 2017, Bunting Magnetics is, once again, exhibiting at the ArabPlast international exhibition (5-8 January 2019, Dubai World Trade Centre, Dubai, UAE).  On stand 5D125, Bunting is exhibiting magnetic separators and metal detectors specifically designed for use in the plastics industry.

ArabPlast is the largest trade expo for plastics, petrochemicals and rubber industry in the MENA region.  The 2017 exhibition had 906 exhibitors from 41 countries and 27,268 visitors from 119 countries.

Magnetic Separator and Metal Detector Training Visit for Eder Design

Training for South Africa Representative at Master Magnets and Bunting Magnetics

Eder Design’s Commercial Director Laura Joubert’s week-long magnetic separator and metal detector training programme proved to be very successful.

“Keeping our representatives informed and updated is so important,” explained Dave Hills, Bunting’s Head of Sales.  “We do this by regularly supporting our representatives in their home territories and also by arranging specific training in the UK.”

Eder Design represent Bunting Magnetics in South Africa.  The company also represents companies including Piovan.  The company is well-respected in the plastic sector and is looking to expand into other industries.

The training programme for Laura focused on the application of metal separation equipment in specific industrial sectors.  At the Master Magnets facility in Redditch, Laura met with Joe Cetti and Phil Tree.  Joe provided training on Metal Detectors, discussing how they are used in the mining and aggregate industry.  With the Metal Detection Ltd brand, Master Magnets has a strong product portfolio.   These include the TN77, QTA and QDC Metal Detectors.

With South Africa having a strong mining history, there are many opportunities for magnetic separators and metal detectors.  Phil talked to Laura about how Magnetic Separators are used to remove tramp metal and also to enhance the grade of mineral ores.  Master Magnets has previously sold large Electro Overband Magnets to mining operations in South Africa.

Whilst at the Master Magnets plant, Laura also witnessed tests on the Stainless Steel Magnetic Separator.  Recycling is an emerging industry in the country.  The demand for technology to recover and clean metal is expected to rise in the next few years.

Training on applications in the plastics sector took place at Bunting’s Berkhamsted facility.  Eder Design has already supplied plastic manufacturers with FF Drawer Filter Magnets and quickTRON Metal Detectors.  The training focused on the latest developments, including developments in the management of plastic waste.

“The visit was hugely beneficial,” commented Dave.  “We wish to thank Laura for taking the time to come over to the UK.  Being here gave us the opportunity for her to meet our team and see the equipment.”

24 Drawer Filter Magnets are under manufacture at our European HQ in Berkhamsted, UK.  The Drawer Filter Magnets are destined for installation in a plastics production operation in France.

The order for the Drawer Filter Magnets was secured by Bunting’s local representative in France, BMS.  BMS specialise in providing technical support to the plastics sector.

  • Magnets:  Three (3) high strength Neodymium Rare Earth Magnets;, three 25mm diameter stainless steel

  • Height:  180mm

  • Flanges:  Bottom and top included, 6.35mm thick

Application

During the manufacturing process of any plastic or plastic product, it is possible for metal to be introduced into the process.  This could be from a wide variety of sources including the wear of processing machinery.

If metal contamination is not removed, it can damage processing equipment and result in increased final product rejects.  The Drawer Filter Magnets are used to attract, hold and thus remove any magnetically susceptible metal contamination.

Developing Business in Poland at SyMas 2017

Bunting Support TEKPRO at International Trade Fair for Powder & Bulk Solids Technologies in Krakow, Poland

As part of their export business development strategy, Tom Higginbottom from Bunting will be supporting their Polish distributor TEKPRO at SyMas, the powder and bulk solids trade fair in Krakow, Poland (18-19 October 2017).

Company TEKPRO Sp. z.o.o. was founded in March 2007 by Danish company TEKEMAS A/S  and the Swiss Dietrich Engineering Consultants sa .  They specialise in providing individual equipment and complete plants to handle and process bulk materials to the Polish market.

“Attending the exhibition and supporting the TEKPRO team is very important,” explained Bunting’s Sales Engineer Tom Higginbottom.  “Being at SyMas allows us to gain an understanding of the market, meeting existing and potential customers, and discussing the industry in general.”

Export Success at FIP Solution Plastique Exhibition

Bunting Magnetics Support BMS France at Plastics Show in France

Dave Hills, Bunting Europe’s Head of Sales, was on the stand of local distributor, BMS France for the duration of the major annual international plastics exhibition, FIP Solution Plastique, held in Lyon, France between 13th and 16th June 2017.  Dave gave us this report:

“Last week [13th to 16th June] it was hot and humid in Lyon.  And it was debatable whether the air conditioning in the exhibition centre was actually working.  However, the turnout for the show was fantastic.

FIP Solution Plastique is the number 1 show for the plastics sector in France.  There was a technically and globally diverse group of exhibitors present, all specialising in working in the plastics industry.

We were present to support our local distributor BMS France.  Being on the stand gave me the opportunity to develop relationships with the BMS team, deliver some product training, and also learn about the plastics market in France.  I also had the opportunity to meet the BMS Spain team, based in Barcelona.

It was also good to meet and talk with other equipment suppliers, many of who had equipment on display at the show.  It was interesting to hear their feedback on present market conditions.  We find exports visits such as this invaluable.

Along with our Metal Detectors and Magnetic Separators, BMS had a wide range of equipment on the stand.  There were 3 operating Boy Injection Moulding Machines on one stand and a Woojin Injection Moulding Machine on a 2nd stand.

There were also 5 Wanner Granulators, and Pixargus had a live demonstration of their unique surface inspection and dimension measurement system.

The extensive range of products and the interactive nature of the BMS France stand made it one of the busiest at the show.

It was interesting to think that all of the aforementioned equipment relies on the plastic pellets and raw materials being metal-free.  And getting metal out of plastic is our speciality.

BMS France was able to talk to visitors about a complete solution, with demonstrations of the quickTRON 03R Metal Detector and FF Drawer Filter Magnet removing both ferrous and non-ferrous metals.

Being in France also gave me an opportunity to hear people’s thoughts about BREXIT.  Unlike some other European countries that I have visited since the referendum, people in France have a very negative opinion about the UK leaving the EU.  In fact, many people asked whether the decision could be overturned.  This just highlights the importance of a negotiated exit that involves free trade.

However, the atmosphere at the exhibition was very positive.  Indeed, BMS France sold 2 Injection Moulding Machines at the show, which was fantastic.  And both will be protected by Bunting Metal Detectors and Magnetic Separators.

An excellent show and we will be back in 2018.”

Bunting Magnetics Europe distributor, BMS France, is exhibiting Metal Detectors and Magnetic Separators on stand D16/E13 at the FIP Solution Plastique show in Lyon, France (13th to 16th June 2017).  FIP Plastique Plastique has been the number 1 show for the plastics sector in France for over 30 years.

Grate Magnets

Grate Magnets or Magnetic Grates are manufactured with a 25mm Tube Magnet from high quality 304 Stainless Steel, with 316 Stainless Steel as an option for high corrosive applications.  They are available for Square or Round Openings and with optional baffles.  Standard sizes range from 100mm to 1000mm.  These Grate Magnets can be placed in hoppers or feed pipes to collect ferrous metals and are ideally suited when they can be easily removed for cleaning.

French Plastics Recycling Operation Installs Bunting Drawer Magnet

The latest HS Drawer Magnet has just been boxed ready for despatch to a Plastics Recycling company in France.  The Magnetic Separator was manufactured in the Bunting Magnetics European manufacturing facility in Berkhamsted, UK.

The French Plastics Recycling operation will install the HS Drawer Magnet to capture and remove ferrous metal contamination from the reclaimed plastic.

HFS Drawer Magnets are commonly used in virgin and secondary plastic processing operations.  The Magnetic Separator is equipped with powerful Neodymium Rare Earth Tube Magnets which enable the capture of both very fine iron and also work-hardened Stainless Steel.

How the HFS Drawer Magnet Works

In operation, material falls under gravity into the opening of the HFS Drawer Magnet.  Inside the housing are two rows of Tube Magnets, staggered to ensure that all the product has to pass over the surface of a magnet.  The magnetically susceptible particles are attracted and held onto the surface of the Tube Magnet, whilst non-magnetic material passes through.

The HFS design of Drawer Magnet enables easy-cleaning of the Tube Magnets.  Unlike other designs of Easy-Clean Grate Magnet, the Tube Magnets are not positioned within an outer tube and are in direct contact with the product.  This ensures maximum magnetic particle capture.

When the Tube Magnets need to be cleaned (daily cleaning is a recommended minimum requirement), the extended Tube Magnets are manually pulled outside the housing using an external handle.  Any captured magnetic material is stopped from being pulled outside the housing by specially designed Grommets.  These Grommets are positioned in the side of the housing and fitted tightly around each Tube Magnet.  Each Tube Magnet has a non-magnetic tapered end which, on reaching the Grommet, allows the captured metal contamination to fall into a separate collection bin.  The Tube Magnets are then fully cleaned and ready to be re-introduced into the product stream.

28 In Line Magnets Remove Metal from Baby Food

Record Sales for In Line Magnets in 2016

A record 28 Pneumatic In-Line Magnets (PIMs) have been supplied to a major global Baby Food products company in Germany.  The Magnetic Separators are installed into food processing lines to attract and remove any magnetically susceptible materials.

Metal is commonly found in food during processing.  The metal can originate from a breakdown of processing equipment (e.g. failure of a screen or pump), or even be delivered with the food raw materials.  The vast majority of food producers use Magnetic Separators and Metal Detectors to remove and detect any rogue metal before any food product leaves the production plant.

Pneumatic In-Line Magnets (PIMs) are specifically designed for installation into pneumatic conveying systems.  The 28 supplied for the Baby Food application are fitted with extremely powerful Neodymium Iron Boron Rare Earth Magnets.  These produce the highest magnetic field and capture even small shards of metal and work-hardened stainless steel.

The internal design of the PIM ensures that the product flow is not compromised.  The powerful flat-faced magnet with two tapered-steps is mounted on one side of the PIM and swings out from the body for easy cleaning.  To ensure there is no leakage during operation, the flat-faced magnet is held firmly into place by long-threaded bolts.

Plate Magnets Remove Metal from Tobacco

Record Export Sales for Plate Magnets

Bunting Magnetic Europe manufactured a record number of Plate Magnets for Export to Indonesian tobacco processing plants in 2016.  Each Plate Magnet is installed to magnetically attract and hold tramp metal and nearly 100 were manufactured.

Plate Magnets are used in tobacco processing to remove metal contamination introduced from collection and transportation of tobacco leaves, or in the process.  The Metal Contamination can be large in the form of a nail or bolt, or as small shards.  Metal can damage delicate processing equipment such as the blades on the tobacco leaf cutter, which can prove to be very costly.

Metal Found in Plastic Recycling Bunting MagneticsPlate Magnets are available in two magnet strengths.  Standard Ferrite or Ceramic Plate Magnets are suitable for larger tramp metal.  However, for removing metal from tobacco, higher strength Rare Earth (Neodymium Iron Boron) Magnets were required.  These produce exceptionally strong magnetic fields and capture very fine magnetic particles.

Although many Plate Magnets are installed in chutes, these models for this tobacco installation were mounted above the conveyors.   Metal contamination is magnetically attracted up off the moving conveyor and onto the face of the Plate Magnet.  The amount of metal captured by the Plate Magnets was substantial.

Each Plate Magnet had a Flat Face and was designed to be Self-Cleaning.  They were also supplied with a mounting kit and removable lever.

The specifications of the Plate Magnets supplied were:

  • 31 Rare Earth (Neodymium Iron Boron) Plate Magnets with 165mm (6.5″) deep magnetic field;
  • 38 Rare Earth (Neodymium Iron Boron) Plate Magnets with 125mm (5″) deep magnetic field;
  • 29 Rare Earth (Neodymium Iron Boron) Plate Magnets with 90mm (3.5″) deep magnetic field;
