24 Drawer Filter Magnets are under manufacture at our European HQ in Berkhamsted, UK.  The Drawer Filter Magnets are destined for installation in a plastics production operation in France.

“The Drawer Filter Magnet is one of our most popular magnetic separators,” said Dave Hills, Bunting’s Head of Sales.

The order for the Drawer Filter Magnets was secured by Bunting’s local representative in France, BMS.  BMS specialise in providing technical support to the plastics sector.

All 24 Drawer Filter Magnets have the same specification:

  • Model:  LP-1600-PL: Low Profile Drawer Filter Magnet
  • Magnets:  Three (3) high strength Neodymium Rare Earth Magnets;, three 25mm diameter stainless steel
  • Dimension of the opening:  150mm square
  • Height:  180mm
  • Rows of Magnets:  One
  • Flanges:  Bottom and top included, 6.35mm thick
  • Slide gate:  6.35mm thick
  • Viewing port:  Unit features a 9.5mm thick clear polycarbonate drawer front

Application

During the manufacturing process of any plastic or plastic product, it is possible for metal to be introduced into the process.  This could be from a wide variety of sources including the wear of processing machinery.

If metal contamination is not removed, it can damage processing equipment and result in increased final product rejects.  The Drawer Filter Magnets are used to attract, hold and thus remove any magnetically susceptible metal contamination.

Export Success at FIP Solution Plastique Exhibition

Bunting Magnetics Support BMS France at Plastics Show in France

Dave Hills, Bunting Europe’s Head of Sales, was on the stand of local distributor, BMS France for the duration of the major annual international plastics exhibition, FIP Solution Plastique, held in Lyon, France between 13th and 16th June 2017.  Dave gave us this report:

“Last week [13th to 16th June] it was hot and humid in Lyon.  And it was debatable whether the air conditioning in the exhibition centre was actually working.  However, the turnout for the show was fantastic.

FIP Solution Plastique is the number 1 show for the plastics sector in France.  There was a technically and globally diverse group of exhibitors present, all specialising in working in the plastics industry.

We were present to support our local distributor BMS France.  Being on the stand gave me the opportunity to develop relationships with the BMS team, deliver some product training, and also learn about the plastics market in France.  I also had the opportunity to meet the BMS Spain team, based in Barcelona.

It was also good to meet and talk with other equipment suppliers, many of who had equipment on display at the show.  It was interesting to hear their feedback on present market conditions.  We find exports visits such as this invaluable.

Along with our Metal Detectors and Magnetic Separators, BMS had a wide range of equipment on the stand.  There were 3 operating Boy Injection Moulding Machines on one stand and a Woojin Injection Moulding Machine on a 2nd stand.

There were also 5 Wanner Granulators, and Pixargus had a live demonstration of their unique surface inspection and dimension measurement system.

The extensive range of products and the interactive nature of the BMS France stand made it one of the busiest at the show.

It was interesting to think that all of the aforementioned equipment relies on the plastic pellets and raw materials being metal-free.  And getting metal out of plastic is our speciality.

BMS France was able to talk to visitors about a complete solution, with demonstrations of the quickTRON 03R Metal Detector and FF Drawer Filter Magnet removing both ferrous and non-ferrous metals.

Being in France also gave me an opportunity to hear people’s thoughts about BREXIT.  Unlike some other European countries that I have visited since the referendum, people in France have a very negative opinion about the UK leaving the EU.  In fact, many people asked whether the decision could be overturned.  This just highlights the importance of a negotiated exit that involves free trade.

However, the atmosphere at the exhibition was very positive.  Indeed, BMS France sold 2 Injection Moulding Machines at the show, which was fantastic.  And both will be protected by Bunting Metal Detectors and Magnetic Separators.

An excellent show and we will be back in 2018.”

Metal Found In Rice

Magnetic Separator Ensuring Food Safety

There are a lot of negative Food Safety reports about metal being found in food (e.g. Morrisons’ Green Beans, Sainsbury’s Bread), but there is also a great deal of good practice.

Whilst undertaking an annual Magnetic Separation Survey at a rice processing factory, we were able to see the importance of installing metal separation equipment.

Fine Iron on Bunting Grate MagnetThe Food Processor had installed Bunting FF Drawer Grate Magnets at the base of hoppers holding Basmati rice prior to packing.  For maximum fine iron removal, the Grate Magnets were constructed with high strength Rare Earth Magnets with magnetic fields of approximately 11,200 Gauss on the surface.

A schedule had been established for the Grate Magnets to be cleaned on a weekly basis.  During the Survey, the amount of fine iron captured and held onto the surface of each of the Tube Magnets was found to be  substantial.  Subsequently, one of the recommendations was to increase the cleaning frequency.  This would then ensure that the Magnetic Separators were working optimally as performance can drop if the Magnets are laden with captured metal.

Where Does the Metal Come From?

Fine Iron on Bunting Grate MagnetThe majority of rice processed in the UK is imported from South-East Asia.  The process of collection, storage and transportation results in fine iron being introduced.  Additionally, very small amounts of fine iron may be introduced during the handling of the rice at the UK plant.  This could be from the wear of processing equipment.

Does the Amount of Metal Vary?

The UK food processor has very little control on the amount of metal present in the delivered rice and even working closely with the rice grower to improve Food Safety standards does not ensure a metal-free product.  As with all food imports, there are many stages of handling and storage where metal contamination occurs.  The amount of metal can vary significantly and, subsequently, the frequency of cleaning the Magnetic Separators will alter.

Good Food Safety Practice

As demonstrated at this rice processing plant, Magnetic Separators will separate magnetically susceptible metal (including work-hardened stainless steel) prior to any product reaching the consumer.  Annual reviews with the suppliers of the equipment will provide assurance of metal-separation performance.

Magnetic Separators at Southern Manufacturing and Electronics

Metal Separation Solutions from Bunting Magnetics

A range of Bunting Magnetic Separators will be displayed on stand U74 at the Southern Manufacturing & Electronics show held at FIVE in Farnborough, UK (21st to 23rd March 2017).
