Bunting Successfully Transition to ISO9001 2015 Quality and ISO14001 2015 Environmental Standards

Bunting Magnetics Europe has successfully transitioned to the new ISO9001:2015 Quality and ISO 14001 :2015 Environment Standards.  The certification covers the manufacture and supply of Magnetic Separators, Metal Detectors, and Magnets and Magnetic Assemblies from their European manufacturing headquarters in Berkhamsted, UK.

Denis Elkins, Bunting Magnetics Europe’s Quality Assurance Manager, explained the importance of transitioning to the ISO9001:2015 Quality standard.

“Bunting has held the ISO9001 quality standard since May 2005.  The quality of our products, manufacturing processes, and business management is of utmost importance to us and our customers, and, we believe, is one of the primary reasons for our continued success.”

The ISO 9001:2015 Quality Standard was revised in 2015 and now has a definitive focus on business performance.  The process approach has been combined with risk-based thinking, promoting the Plan-Do-Check-Act cycle at all levels in the organization.  The new standard acknowledges that modern organisations will have several management standards in place, and the 2015 version has been designed to be easily integrated with other management systems.  The new version also provides a solid base for sector-quality standards (automotive, aerospace, medical industries, etc.), and takes into account the needs of regulators.

Bunting also recognises the importance of adopting good working practices in accordance with international Environmental Standards and originally attained the ISO14001 standard in February 2002.  The ISO14001:2015 Environmental Standard sets out the criteria for a certifiable environmental management system.  It maps out a framework that a company or organization can follow to set up an effective environmental management system, regardless of its activity or sector.

“We have been actively involved in the environmental sector supplying metal recycling equipment for many years,” explained Denis, “and so maintaining this environment standard was simply common-sense.  As a UK manufacturing company we recognise that we have a responsibility to protect the environment and the standard provides the framework to implement, measure and manage the most effective methods of operation to reduce waste and pollution.”

Bunting Expands the Sales Team

Gordon Kerr and Tom Higginbottom Join Bunting Europe

Bunting Magnetics Europe Ltd has expanded their UK sales team with the appointment of two new sales engineers.  The appointments follow a period of sustained sales growth and the acquisition of Master Magnets.

New Bunting Sales EmployeesTom Higginbottom (left in the photograph) joins Bunting’s external sales team and has an engineering background, with particular knowledge of hydraulics.  Tom’s focus will be face-to-face customer contact, providing onsite support and advice on solving metal contamination problems.

In a new internal role, Gordon Kerr is responsible for business development.  Gordon previously held a sales and marketing position at Anglian Home Improvements before becoming a Project Manager at Ceramica & Stone.

“There is a real positive vibe in the company,” said Gordon, “and I am looking forward to contributing to the company’s success.”

Dave Hills, Bunting’s Head of Sales, explained the reason for the appointments.

“Meeting clients at site continues to be one of our top priorities.  It enables us to get a better understanding of the problems faced by the client, which ultimately results in being able to offer better solutions.  As we [Bunting} have grown and expanded, the demand for visits has increased and appointing Tom was a natural progression.  Tom has a wealth of engineering experience and is an exciting addition to the team.”

“With Gordon, we have a new focus on business development.  He will be working very closely with the external sales team, identifying potential clients and arranging meetings.  His appointment marks the proactive action we need to take to reach out to new customers.”

Tom and Gordon will be supporting customers who need Magnetic Separators, Metal Detectors, and Factory Magnetic Solutions including Lifting Magnets and Magnetic Chucks.

Sales Growth for Bunting Europe in 2016

Record 2016 Performance Despite Challenging Economic and Political Environments

“Our success in 2016 is built on the sales and marketing foundations built over the past three years,” reported Simon Ayling, Bunting Europe’s Managing Director,

Bunting Europe has reported another year of growth in 2016, with a record level of sales recorded in September 2016.

“Despite the political and economic concerns about Brexit and the USA, we have strengthened our export network of distributors and have subsequently seen a growth in orders,” said Simon.

In 2016, Bunting attended a number of trade shows both under the Bunting name and alongside locally based distributors.

“Over the past three years we have worked hard on improving our company profile.  We are now attending more trade shows than ever before.  This is supported with very active marketing, especially using social media platforms.  In 2016, we revamped our main website and that had a significant effect on the number of visitors.”

Through attending trade shows and also proactively searching, the Bunting distributor network has expanded significantly.  New representatives have been appointed in Denmark, Poland, Turkey, and the Netherlands, and additional support has been given to existing distributors in Spain and France.jordi-castells-smed

“Earlier this month we attended our first trade show for the plastics sector in the Middle East [Arabplast] which was a great success.  Our increase in Export sales has happened because we are out there, in the market place, speaking with distributors and customers,” explained Simon.

In terms of products, sales in Metal Detectors into the Food, Plastics and Pharmaceutical industry have grown significantly.  This is partly due to additional training of the Bunting sales team to improve customer service and support.

The Bunting Europe business is divided into Processing Equipment (Magnetic Separators and Metal Detectors) and Magnet/Magnetic Assemblies.

“We had seen a significant growth in business from new customers for Magnetic Assemblies.  These range from one off development projects for universities to contracts with major aerospace manufacturers,” said Simon.

“Our new range of modular magnetising chargers and equipment for pre and post assembly of magnetic assemblies have also proved to be very successful and we anticipate further growth in sales for these in 2017.”

Earlier this month [January 2017] Bunting Europe announced the acquisition of UK Magnetic Separator and Metal Detector manufacturer, Master Magnets UK.

UK Magnetic Separator Manufacturer Joins Global Bunting Operation

In a momentous agreement, Bunting® Magnetics Co. announces the signing of an agreement to acquire Master Magnets Ltd.  Master Magnets is a UK-based manufacturer of magnetic separation equipment.  Based in Redditch, United Kingdom, Master Magnets Ltd manufactures an extensive range of permanent and electro magnetic separation equipment, and metal detection equipment.  They specialise in solving metal and mineral separation problems in industries such as recycling, mineral process, mining, quarrying and bulk handling.  Master Magnets have a global network of distributors who will now join the Bunting team.

The acquisition will build on and complement Bunting Magnetics Co.’s global foundation already in place through broadened customer reach, new manufacturing capabilities and the opportunity to sell into new markets.

The company also supplies a full range of Mineral Separation Equipment for customers all around the world. The company will continue to operate out of its Redditch, UK headquarters.

Bunting Featuring at Plast Eurasia 2016

Supporting New Distributor for the Turkish Plastics Sector

Bunting Magnetic Separators and Metal Detectors, designed to ‘Get The Metal Out’ of Plastic, will be on display on the Tepro Makine stand (Hall 2-3-4 – Stand : 209-213-304B-401E) at Plast Eurasia 2016 (7-10 December 2016, Tüyap Fair Convention and Congress Center in Istanbul, Turkey).

“The Turkish Plastics sector is vibrant and Plast Eurasia gives us the opportunity to introduce Bunting to a new export market,” explained our Head of Sales, Dave Hills.

Dave met the new Turkish distributor, Tepro Makine at the recent K2016 Plastics Show in Germany.

“I met Sadrettin Nikbay [Tepro Makine’s Sales Director] on our stand at K2016 and was impressed with his knowledge of the Plastics sector and his understanding of the need for good Metal Separation,” said Dave.  “They subsequently purchased stock for the Plast Eurasia show (FF Drawer Grate Magnets) which we will be demonstrating.  Since the K2016 show, we have been discussing a number of Magnetic Separator and Metal Detector projects in Turkey.  The level of interest has been fantastic.”

Tepro Makine had been looking for a high quality Magnetic Separator and Metal Detector supplier to work with in Turkey.  Quality and proficiency were both important and Bunting’s knowledge and experience of solving Metal Contamination problems in the plastics sector was important.

Bunting Magnetic Separators such as the FF Drawer Grate Magnet are classed as ‘industry standards’ for the Plastics industry.  The Magnetic Separator range is complemented with Metal Detectors, with the 2 technologies often working together to provide the best metal separation solution.  For Plastics recycling, Bunting has supplied Eddy Current Separators to remove non-ferrous metals and the High Intensity Separation Conveyor (HISC) for removing stainless steel.

Developing Recycling Business in France with Distributor Pronix at Pollutec 2016

Bunting Europe’s distributor in France, Pronix, will be displaying a wide range of recycling equipment at the Pollutec 2016 expo in Lyon (29th November – 2nd December 2016) in Hall 3 Aisle D Stand 175.

The bi-annual Pollutec focuses on the reduction of the impact of human activities on the environment.  This encompasses a wide range of technologies for industry, local authorities and in the service sector.  The global range of exhibitors is extensive.

Dave Hills, Bunting’s Head of Sales, will be supporting Pronix on their Pollutec stand.

“Developing our [Bunting Europe] overseas business has been a primary focus in 2016.  Supporting Pronix in France, by providing Magnetic Separators to display on their stand and being present to assist with handling enquiries, is really important.  Success in developing business in export markets is based on providing good support to our local representatives.”

Providing metal separation solutions for the recycling industry is an important and expanding sector of the business for Bunting.

“Sales of Overband Magnets, Metal Detectors and Eddy Current Separators for recycling applications continues to grow,” explained Dave Hills.  “Introducing new technology such as the Stainless Steel (HISC) Separator has also increased awareness of what we have to offer.”

In 2016, Bunting has been prominent at major recycling and plastics exhibitions in Europe including Waste 16, RWM 2016 and K2016.  Earlier in November 2016, Dave Hills and client Roger Evans from Recapture Plastics spoke at a major recycling conference in The Netherlands about the challenges of setting up a plastics recycling operation.

Developing Export Business in Spain

Bunting’s Spanish Distributor Visits UK for Training

The Bunting overseas Distributor network continues to grow and last week we were visited by Jordi Castells of SMED Tecnica in Spain.

Jordi’s visit to Berkhamsted was for training and strategic planning.  Business in Spain has been growing steadily and Dave Hills, our Head of Sales, has regularly visited the territory.

“It is fantastic to see Jordi here in the UK,” said Dave.  “Having Jordi in our European headquarters enables us to deliver an intense training programme.  The training covered Magnetic Separation and Metal Detection and included visiting UK customers with our sales team.”

SMED Tecnica specialises in providing solutions and equipment for solids handling (powder, granules, tablets, chips, fibers,  etc.) and slurries.  Many of SMED’s customers encounter problems with metal contamination.  Being able to advise and propose solutions with Magnetic Separators or Metal Detectors extends the service SMED is able to provide their customers.

The company name of SMED refers to a technique used in the food and pharmaceutical industry.   The ‘Single Minute Exchange of Die’ relates to rapidly changing equipment to eliminate downtime between production change such as with recipes and formulas.  The SMED team have the experience and knowledge to help companies improve their processes, achieve higher productivity and reduce manufacturing costs.

“Developing business in any overseas market is dependent upon having well respected and knowledgeable local representatives,” explained Dave.  “Jordi and the SMED team have that presence and have already had great success in developing business for both Magnetic Separators and Metal Detectors.  There is huge potential that will be realised by us all working closely together.”

The week long training visit by Jordi from SMED followed the recent announcement of a new distributor being appointed in Denmark.  

“We anticipate announcing the appointment of additional distributors in the near future,” said Dave.  “We are in a period of exciting and substantial overseas expansion.”

Record Sales Month for Bunting

Magnet and Magnetic Separator Manufacturer Hits New Heights

We are thrilled to announce that we recorded our highest ever monthly sales in September 2016.  The end-of-month sales figure surpassed seven digits and exceeded the previous highest month by 10%.

Simon Ayling, our Managing Director, explained the reasons for the continued growth.

“September 2016 was the culmination of a period of sustained sales growth.  Despite the negativity surrounding the recent Brexit vote, sales in both our domestic and export markets continue to be strong.  And feedback from our network of overseas representatives remains very positive.”

Bunting has two distinct divisions within our business.  The first specialises in providing Total Magnet and Magnetic Solutions and the company has been designing, manufacturing and supplying permanent and holding magnets and magnetic assemblies into a wide range of industries for over 50 years.  The second division provides Metal Separation solutions to the processing and manufacturing industries including Plastics, Recycling and Food with a range of Magnetic Separators and Metal Detectors.

“Sales in September were approximately 35% up on our normal monthly run-rate.  We experienced strong demand from existing customers and a growth in new customers.  Sales of Metal Separation equipment into the Food, Plastics and Recycling industries were higher than normal.

“We also completed the design and manufacture of a bespoke, high voltage magnetising system for use in a high performance energy generation business.  This was despatched to the client in September for installation before the end of the year.  We are one of a small number of companies in the world who are able to handle projects for magnetisers.

At our manufacturing headquarters in Hertfordshire, we also design and supply a wide range of bespoke technical magnetic assemblies.  Simon explained the importance of this section of the business.

“In the UK, one part of our design team is focused on developing specialist magnetic assemblies.  Many British based businesses want to work with a UK based design team on development projects, resulting in sales growth.  Our expertise also means that we are able to support and supply many overseas clients in Europe and beyond.”

Simon remains very optimistic about the future, despite the reported concerns about economic downturns since the UK voted to leave the EU.

“We have just attended a very successful recycling exhibition called RWM and have just returned from a major plastics exhibition [K2016, Dusseldorf, 19th – 26th October 2016] in Germany.  We continue to work hard to maintain our growth, expanding our global network of representatives and our product portfolio.  We have a proactive marketing and sales plan and great team that keep us moving forward.”

Is UK Manufacturing Really in Recession?

The BBC has reported that UK manufacturing has returned to recession for the 3rd time in 8 years.  This frightening statistic illustrates the challenges facing the manufacturing industry in the UK, with manufacturing output for the first quarter of 2016 being 1.9% lower than the same quarter in 2015.

However, there is some positive news, with PRW reporting that production of rubber and plastic products did show strong signs of recovery, increasing by 1.6%.  For us, this is good news as we supply equipment such as Magnetic Separators and Metal Detectors to remove metal from the plastics process and we have seen a general increase in activity in that sector.

Manufacturing provides the cornerstone for any economy and the uncertainty surrounding the future existence of steel production in the UK continues to dominate the news.  However, that uncertainty is not only related to steel production, with the UK’s referendum on EU membership gathering pace as we approach 23rd June.  The predicted outcome of whether the UK will or will not remain in the EU is very much in the balance.

As a UK manufacturer of Magnetic Separators and Magnets, we are very aware of the challenges.  Many of our customers are, themselves, manufacturers.  We have broadened our sights and worked hard this year to develop business overseas with new distributors and representatives.  The effect on our overseas business after the referendum is an unwelcome unknown and this is an uncertainty that doesn’t help when setting marketing and business strategies for the future.

These are challenging times for the UK’s manufacturing sector.
